Wednesday is RENEWED for a second season after record success on Netflix

The Netflix hit on Wednesday was officially renewed for a second season – after becoming one of the most successful shows of all time on the streaming platform.

The Addams Family spin-off focuses on goth teenager Wednesday, played by Jenna Ortega, as she moves into boarding school Nevermore Academy.

In an interview with Tudum.com on Friday, creators/showrunners/executive producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar said, ‘It’s been amazing to create a show that has connected with people all over the world.

‘Thrilled to continue Wednesday’s torturous journey into season two.’

In its opening weekend in November, the show racked up a record 341.2 million hours of viewing, surpassing Stranger Things, according to Netflix.

On December 13, the Tim Burton-directed show crossed the 1 billion hour mark.

It is also the No. 1 show in 83 countries – tying with Stranger Things.

Netflix said in a tweet: ‘Wednesday now holds the record for most hours watched in a week for an English language series on Netflix at 341.2 MILLION HOURS!’

‘The series — starring Jenna Ortega of the Tim Burton, Al Gough and Miles Millar EPs — is #1 in 83 countries, beating the record set by Stranger Things 4.’

It arrived on Netflix in November and went straight to the top of the most-watched list, beating the likes of The Crown, 1899 and Dead to Me.

The haunting drama sees Catherine Zeta-Jones playing the one and only Morticia, and her husband Gomez played by Luis Guzmán, along with Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen) and Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez).

Christina Ricci, who guest starred as Wednesday on The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values ​​(1993) also makes a guest appearance on the Netflix show as school teacher Miss Thornhill.

Alfred Gough previously hinted at a possible sequel, saying “there’s definitely more you can explore in the world of the Addams.”

Speaking to Empire, Gough said: ‘[Screenwriter] Miles Millar and I are talking about it. There’s definitely more you can explore in the world of the Addams.’

In an interview with TV Line, Millar also confirmed that discussions are ongoing – with producers keen to focus on other family members rather than just Wednesday.

It comes after viewers were shocked by how the Things scenes for the show were filmed.

Netflix gave audiences at home a behind-the-scenes look at the latest hit show on Sunday.

Photographs posted to the streaming giant’s Twitter account showed actor Victor Dorobantu wearing a blue screen suit with his bare hand exposed.

Wednesday and Ortega received nominations – Best TV Series (Musical/Comedy) and Best Actress (Musical/Comedy) – at the 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards, airing Jan. 10 on NBC/Peacock.

Jenna faces stiff competition against Jean Smart from Hacks, Quinta Brunson from Abbott Elementary, Selena Gomez from Only Murders in the Building and Kaley Cuoco from The Flight Attendant.
